This conference is dedicated to Professor Duško Vitas, who initiated and organized the Permanent Seminar in Mathematical and Computational Linguistics at the Mathematical Institute of SASA way back in 1978.
Professor Vitas thus laid the foundations of the computational linguistics school in Serbia, which has been evolving with a varying pace, albeit continuously, for the last 35 years.
A special occasion for this conference is the prestigious award that Professor Vitas received from the Government of the Republic of France for his contribution to the development of scientific cooperation between France and Serbia - Medal of the Order of Academic Palms (Chevalier de l`Ordre des Palmes Académiques).

Prof. Vladimir Marković will give a lecture: "Virtual classification of hyperbolic 3-manifolds" on Monday, October 28th Oct 2013, at 14:00, room 455, I floor, Faculty of Mathematics.
Abstract: The first part of the talk will be aimed at the general mathematical audince (including undergraduate students). We will describe the aims of Low Dimensional Geometry and Topology through pictures and movies. The second part of the talk will be focused on the recent work that resulted in the virtual classification of 3-manifolds.
During the past few years, J. Kahn and I developed a theory (based among other things on deep statistical properties of geometric flows) that led to the solution of the Ehrenpreis conjecture and (in some sense more importantly) the proof of the Surface Subgroup Theorem in 3-manifold topology. In particular, this theorem implies that every hyperbolic 3-manifold is cubulated. It then follows from the Agol-Wise theory of cube complexes that every hyperbolic 3-manifold is virtually Haken and virtually fibered. I will also discuss my latest result that aims to classify word hyperbolic groups whose boundary is the 2-spehere (the Cannon Conjecture), the main motivation being that this gives a fundamentally new approach toward proving the Perelman Hyperbolization Theorem for 3-manifolds of negative curvature.
We invite all interested colleagues to attend this lecture!

A distinguished guest, Professor Dr Howard Moskowitz visited Belgrade in March 2013. Prof. Moskowitz is well known as a founder of horizontal segmentation theory, known as the theory MindGenomics, and was awarded SigmaXi (a Nobel Prize for Marketing).
Prof. Moskowitz gave two lectures - the first lecture was directed to a wide audience in the SASA and the second one was for more mathematically oriented audience in the Department of Mathematics of the Mathematical Institute of SASA
Prof. Dr. Howard Moskowitz: "SERBIA 2015 - WHAT CAN GENOMICS TO MIND FOR SERBIA `S FUTURE "
Abstract: We introduce Mind Genomics, the experimental science of the everyday. The talk shows how Serbia as a nation can use this science three ways for economic benefit: 1) create optimal products, 2) type the world`s customers in terms of the desired aspects of medical experience, and 3) improve the teaching of mathematics.
Prof. Dr. Howard Moskowitz: "MIND GENOMICS: APPLYING TO UNDERSTAND AND MATHEMATICS OPTIMIZE THE SCIENCE OF THE EVERYDAY "
Abstract: We introduce Mind Genomics, the experimental science of the everyday. The talk shows how we can understand 1) the mental economics of food preferences, 2) the quantitative linkage of emotions to ideas, and 3) the creation of new ideas by Combining elements.

This year University of Belgrade improved its position in the Shangai list of the top 500 universities in the world.
Since 2003. the list presents the statistics of the top-ranked academic institutions. In the report for 2013. University of Belgrade is placed at the position between 301. and 400. places and this is a great improvement comparing to last year ranking between 401. and 500. places.
This year, the oldest Serbian University is ranked, for the first time, in one of the scientific fields - mathematics, and it`s between 101. and 150. place in the world..
This exceptional success is of great importance for the Serbian mathematics and especially for the Faculty of Mathematics.
Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU) was performed on the basis of 6 indicators. The key point of this success and placement of mathematics among the top 150 is the percentage of the scientific papers that are published in the top 20% ranked magazines.
University of Belgrade got 93.4 points in this category in the field of mathematics, which places it among the top U.S. universities such as Princeton and Harvard, and the result is even better than Berkeley and Cambridge.

The project "Commodore Serbia" was presented in March 2013. at the Faculty of Mathematics
The project was presented by Aleksandar Adzic, Faculty of Mathematics student.
Title of presentation: Commodore International/Commodore64
Content:
The whole concept of this presentation is familiar with all present technology is its strong use of the eighties had 20 century. The lecture was interactive, with direct Commodore64 programming on a microcomputer. In addition to the source code the most interesting programs were presented that were once very popular. The audio and video production of the microcomputer was also mentioned, as well as hardware and its limitations.
Some of the topics covered by this lecture are:
1. Getting Acknowledged with Commodore64
2. Basics of programming environment and programming language BASIC v.2 and implementation of the system Commodore64
3. Data storage and analogue media
